fka twigs is truly one of a kind - an almost flawless discography. ultraviolet is another standout for me too. the production is amazing i love the clicking sounds in the beginning.
People often struggle to choose a lens through which to view British experimental singer/songwriter FKA Twigs’ music, and lenses sometimes make. I very recently started to like water me - for some reason it didn’t click for a while but i think it’s such an emotional and hypnotic song now. FKA Twigs' 'M3LL155X' EP is Required Listening.
i also love in time very very much - those two have been on repeat lately. glass & patron is such a unique and entrancing song - hearing the sped up verse for the first time was so mesmerising. it’s impossible for me to pick a single favourite song but ones that particularly stand out to me are kicks, give up, pendulum and two weeks. Holy terrain and cellophane were early favourites of mine and it wasn’t until this year that i really got into lp1, melissa and ep1/2, as well as caprisongs of course. i think i was initially drawn by her reference to mary magdalene and the art work but i don’t really remember. At a time when female musicians and artists are challenging gender norms and reasserting their autonomy, M3LL155X joins them as a fierce and important contribution to a radical dialogue.The first song i listened to by her was home with you which i actually found quite scary at the time lmao - to be fair i was 14 and hadn’t heard much music as experimental as hers at that point.
Ultimately, whether she’s giving birth to rainbow-coloured ribbons in “ Glass & Patron”, channelling vogue legends in “ Figure 8” or challenging sexual politics in “I’m Your Doll”, the world that FKA twigs has created is distinctly, definitely and defiantly hers, bound up in her female energy and released into the world. With videos that incorporate forward-thinking dance techniques and technology, as well as a collection of genre-defying releases and career-defining live shows, FKA twigs has long cemented her position as an artist who is rewriting the sound and look of modern music. It's not the first game-changing musical creation she’s put her name to, either. As we pointed out earlier this year, “M3LL155X” refers to her “personal female energy" and "things that affect that balance", and there couldn’t be a more accurate way of describing the spirit of this EP than with those words.
